In the mountains of China, there is a group of young minds that yearn for knowledge and dream of the future. However, the reality they face is full of poverty and challenges, and ICSO has been contributing to education in China’s mountainous regions, providing a wide range of educational support for children in these impoverished mountainous areas. One of the notable initiatives is the “One Book, One Love” program.
01 Background
Poverty has been a major concern of society since ancient times. However, public welfare organizations have been exploring ways to support poverty-stricken areas.
Traditional distribution of goods, while meeting urgent needs, is difficult to create a long-term impact. This approach usually fails to improve the overall economic situation in impoverished areas or provide lasting opportunities and resources. What’s more, the lack of educational resources in impoverished areas often prevents children from obtaining a quality education, which will seriously hinder their future development and escape from poverty, making it difficult for them to gain a foothold in the wave of rapid social development.
Therefore, in July 2018, ICSO and the China Social Relief Foundation (CSRF) joined hands to launch the “One Book, One Love” series for the first time, and officially joined the Tencent Public Welfare Platform to light a bright beacon for the future of children in mountainous areas.
02 Program Content
The core concept of the “One Book, One Love” program is to provide elementary school in impoverished mountainous areas with extracurricular reading materials, so as to cultivate children’s interests and knowledge. Books are extremely important to children. They are a source of knowledge, help children explore the world, improve language skills, and stimulate creativity. Reading builds character, expands horizons and lays the foundation for future success. However, children in these underprivileged areas usually only have access to what is in textbooks and lack broader knowledge. This program has succeeded in bringing them more reading opportunities, broadening their horizons and stimulating their curiosity. The program not only provides books, but also opens the door to the world for them.
03 Projects carried out
As of April 2020, ICSO has raised more than RMB 100,000 (including public and private donations) for the “One Book, One Love” campaign. All these funds have been used to purchase books, teaching facilities, new desks and chairs for poor schools. This substantial support has provided the children in the mountainous areas with better learning conditions, enabling them to better cope with the challenges of the future. The successful implementation of this program not only improves the children’s educational resources, but also plants the seeds for future development.
