In a remote mountainous area of Gansu Province in western China, there is a small elementary school building that stands at the top of a mountain surrounded by craggy cliffs and treacherous peaks, where living conditions are difficult and transportation is often cut off, making it difficult for the children to receive a full education. Most of the children’s parents are farmers or herders with meager incomes and cannot afford to support each child’s education, let alone provide quality educational resources.
However, in such an environment, there is a teaching team that puts down their lucrative salaries in the city and volunteers to come to this elementary school to lead the children to a better future with Mandarin and love. In order to teach better, they made their own desks and chairs out of straw and fabric, made blackboards out of simple stone slabs, while bringing their own teaching utensils and power supply to show the children the path of life and the sea of knowledge. The children saw a new world and new opportunities, they felt and learned more, and at the same time gained confidence and courage to start pursuing their dreams.
The teaching team comes from the ICSO International Public Welfare Support Organization’s “One Lesson, One Love” project. Since its inception, ICSO has maturely developed a variety of public welfare projects targeting education in mountainous areas.
01 Fledgling Program
The roc rises with the wind one day, and rises 90,000 miles. Every child is a small eagle that needs the care of adults to grow up. The Eagle Program is mainly aimed at helping school students and was launched by ICSO China in 2019 for education in poor mountainous areas. It is divided into three programs: Eagle Grant, Eagle Scholarship and Eagle Growth Program, each of which provides assistance to students according to their specific conditions, and is committed to building a professional, efficient and transparent public welfare assistance system to provide students with the necessary assistance for their diversified and all-round development. Since its inception, the Eagle Program has covered more than 1,000 rural students and raised more than 1 million yuan in total.
02 One Book, One Love
A book is a love. The mountain of books is a path of diligence, and the sea of learning is a boat of suffering. Reading is the fastest and least expensive way to help children get out of the mountains. One day without books is a hundred days of barrenness. Initiated by ICSO China in 2018, One Book, One Love takes book donation as an entry point, provides book donation services for poor colleges and universities, customizes exclusive assistance programs for the actual conditions of the schools to be assisted, improves the status quo of education disconnection and knowledge disconnection in impoverished areas, and devotes itself to broadening the knowledge reserve of rural children and accumulating strength for their long-term development in the future. Since its launch, One Book One Love has donated more than 7 million RMB, ranging from extracurricular books and teaching aids to sports equipment and student tableware, to improve the quality of education in impoverished mountainous areas in multiple dimensions.
03 One Box of Milk, One Kindness
Milk is a perfect combination of calcium, protein and vitamins needed for human growth, with high nutritional value and easy to absorb, which is very suitable for children in their growth period, and can effectively help them grow physically and intellectually, but children in mountainous areas are often faced with a lack of milk resources. Launched by ICSO China in 2018, One Box of Milk, One Heart, adhering to the concept of caring for children’s physical health and development, continues to carry out volunteer services to provide milk for children in impoverished areas, with a deep understanding of the social realities of impoverished areas, concern for children’s physical and mental health, and care for children’s strong growth. Today, One Box of Milk One Kindness has donated more than 4 million RMB to help improve the health of children in mountainous areas.
04 One Classroom, One Love
A good classroom education resource is a powerful guarantee for children to acquire knowledge. Launched by ICSO China in 2018, One Classroom One Love is aimed at children in impoverished mountainous areas, and consists of a team of volunteers from prestigious schools at home and abroad. The program strives to alleviate the plight of the unbalanced development of regional educational resources, and goes deep into rural and impoverished areas to understand the academic needs of children in mountainous areas and provide them with education to help them learn. The program is funded through the Tencent Public Welfare Platform, the Sina Micro Welfare Platform, as well as donations from corporations and individuals. To date, the program has raised more than 2 million yuan, covering more than 800 rural students.
05 Art Fueling Dreams
Science and art are two sides of the same coin, and only through the synchronized development of art and science can the education level of impoverished elementary school be truly improved. 06 Music Burns Dreams
Music is an art form that expresses human thoughts and feelings and social reality. Music Burns Dreams will help children in mountainous areas fulfill their musical dreams by donating music teaching aids and simple musical instruments, spreading music knowledge through online teaching, and helping to realize the children’s all-round development in morality, intelligence, physicality, aesthetics and labor. Since its launch in 2020, the program has implemented six phases and helped more than 700 rural students.
