ICSO: First of all, congratulations on being named the 2024 ICSO Global Goodwill Ambassador. Could you share with us how you first got involved in philanthropy?
Jiaxin Song: Thank you for the recognition. My journey in philanthropy actually began when I was quite young. I participated in many community service activities in my hometown, but the most influential one was the “Adopt a Senior Program.” That project made me realize how even small gestures of care could greatly improve someone’s life. This powerful experience sparked my interest in public service and showed me that everyone has the ability to make a difference. As I grew older, I began to focus on broader social issues, such as educational inequality and the needs of marginalized communities, which pushed me to look at service work from a longer-term, more systemic perspective.
ICSO: During your time as Student Director at the Jericho Asian Civic Association, what specific projects did you lead?
Jiaxin Song: While at Jericho, I was involved in and led many projects that supported the Asian American community. One of the most impactful was organizing cultural integration events for over 200 Asian American residents, including language assistance services. These efforts not only helped them better adapt to American society but also offered practical support to immigrant families dealing with language barriers and legal challenges in their daily lives. These early leadership experiences helped me realize how powerful organized volunteerism can be in creating meaningful impact across different cultural contexts.

ICSO: Your philanthropic work goes beyond local efforts and extends globally. Can you talk about your experience with international projects?
Jiaxin Song: Yes, my work has increasingly taken on a global scope, particularly in education and refugee aid. I’m especially concerned about education in underprivileged areas of China, where I led initiatives to provide books and educational resources to remote schools. We not only delivered supplies but also helped improve basic infrastructure. These experiences taught me that philanthropy is not just about donating resources—it’s about building systems to ensure those resources truly benefit those in need. Internationally, I’ve also been actively involved in refugee aid. I’ve worked with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to plan and execute fundraising and awareness campaigns, helping to advance global support for displaced populations.
ICSO: You’ve made significant contributions in integrating technology into philanthropy. Could you share how you’ve used data to improve the efficiency of your projects?
Jiaxin Song: I’ve always believed that technology can significantly enhance the impact of public service. During my internship at Microsoft, I learned data analysis tools like SQL and Python, and applied these skills to my service projects. I built intuitive dashboards and data reports to optimize resource allocation, making sure donations and funding reached those who needed them most. This data-driven approach not only helped us manage resources better but also increased the transparency and sustainability of our initiatives. These experiences convinced me that when combined with compassion, technology can be a powerful driver for progress in philanthropy.

ICSO: As a young global philanthropy leader, how do you view the future of international public service?
Jiaxin Song: I believe the future of philanthropy will rely more and more on global collaboration and cross-cultural understanding. As the world becomes more interconnected, global challenges demand global solutions. Technology will play a key role—it can improve efficiency and overcome geographical and cultural barriers, connecting resources and talents across the world. As the ICSO Global Goodwill Ambassador, I hope to promote more cross-cultural collaboration and use technology to address the world’s most pressing issues. ICSO: What are your hopes for the future?
Jiaxin Song: My goal is to continue advancing philanthropic initiatives in education and refugee support, while also encouraging more young people to get involved in public service. I hope to foster more cross-border collaboration and help my generation understand their power and responsibility. I believe public service can not only change the world but also make us all more empathetic and responsible individuals.
