While studying in the UK, Wang Naixin developed a deep concern for environmental protection. One day, she came across an article published by ICSO in a local British media outlet. The report highlighted that a popular beach on the southern coast of England was suffering from severe plastic pollution due to heavy tourist activity. As an environmental advocate, Wang Naixin was determined to get involved directly in marine debris cleanup and contribute to resolving the issue. She proactively signed up for ICSO UK’s marine conservation initiative, Blue Heart, and quickly immersed herself in the work upon receiving her first assignment.
She and her team tackled the large amounts of waste left behind by visitors, including plastic bottles, food wrappers, broken fishing nets, and other debris. They also painstakingly collected microplastics using specialized mesh screens and ensured that the marine habitat remained undisturbed during the cleanup, protecting the wildlife that calls it home.
Beyond her on-the-ground efforts, Wang Naixin also wrote and published articles to share her experiences and insights with a broader audience. She detailed the ecological impact of marine litter—including its toxicity to marine life, the long-term presence of microplastics, and the disruption it causes to the food chain. Through her writing, she encouraged the public to reduce the use of single-use plastics in their daily lives. Her articles were reprinted by several British media outlets, garnering widespread public attention.
Her efforts mobilized over 200 volunteers to join the marine conservation mission and led to the formation of a community group with over a hundred active members. This group not only organizes regular cleanup events but also conducts public outreach sessions on ocean conservation. During two of the environmental awareness campaigns she organized, Wang Naixin created interactive exhibition zones and set up suggestion boxes with voting options to collect real data on marine pollution and brainstorm solutions. These events attracted enthusiastic participation and support from the local community.
After the campaign, Wang Naixin shared her reflections:
“Ocean conservation is not just a slogan—it’s a reality that every person can help change through their actions. I’ve come to understand that environmental protection requires long-term dedication and effort. Through these cleanups, I’ve witnessed the harsh realities of ocean pollution, but I’ve also felt the power of individual actions. I hope my efforts can inspire more people to develop an environmental consciousness, so that together, we can protect this blue ocean we all depend on. Every cleanup, every article, every plea I make is a promise to protect the ocean. I firmly believe that only through collective action and sustained effort can we truly achieve sustainable development for our oceans.”
Against the backdrop of urgent global need for ocean conservation, Wang Naixin has embodied the responsibility and commitment of a true environmentalist. With over 350 hours of volunteer service in the Blue Heart project, she has made outstanding contributions to marine conservation. For this reason, we proudly award her the title of “Ocean Conservation Pioneer.” Her dedication and passion continue to inspire more people to join the cause and work together to safeguard the blue heart of our planet.
