Conversation with ICSO International Philanthropy Ambassador: Chris Hohn, Chairman of the Board, TCI, UK Hedge Fund

Chris Horn, a renowned British hedge fund manager and philanthropist, is known for his aggressive investment strategies and outstanding market performance. With his extraordinary achievements in the field of finance and adherence to social responsibility, he has been honored as the 2023 ICSO International Ambassador of Philanthropy, becoming an outstanding representative of the cross-border fusion of finance and philanthropy in the world. Since founding TCI in 2003, Horn has always been committed to closely integrating corporate profitability with philanthropy, and has donated more than 1 billion pounds through the Children’s Investment Foundation (CIFF), which has tangibly improved the health and education of children in developing countries such as Africa and Southeast Asia.

01 Exclusive Interview

ICSO: Mr. Chris, first of all, I would like to congratulate you on such an outstanding achievement in the field of finance and philanthropy. Not only have you achieved great success in the hedge fund sector with your aggressive investment strategy, but you have also advanced the cause of children’s health and education globally through your continuous large donations. What inspires you to continue to give back a portion of your profits despite your success?

Chris Horn: I was on a business trip in the Philippines when I witnessed underprivileged children foraging for food in a garbage dump, and I realized that wealth had to be used to solve real problems. When we founded TCI, my wife Jamie and I decided to invest a portion of our profits in charity, especially to improve the health and education of children in developing countries I felt it was our responsibility to use our success to make a difference.

ICSO: Your cumulative giving of more than £1 billion through the Children’s Investment Foundation (CIFF) is exemplary in the UK and globally. Can you talk specifically about what programs you are most proud of in terms of charitable giving?

Chris Horn: CIFF’s main focus is on children’s health and education in developing countries. For example, we have facilitated large-scale deworming programs in Africa and Southeast Asia, which have directly improved the nutritional absorption and learning capacity of millions of children. In addition, we have invested significant resources in AIDS prevention and treatment, early childhood education, and improving basic sanitation. Behind every program is an investment in the hopeful future of children!

02 Exclusive Interview

ICSO: Your investment style is known as “shareholder activism”, and your deep involvement in corporate governance is controversial. How do you combine this business strategy with philanthropy?

Chris Horn: I’ve always believed that investing and philanthropy are not opposites, but rather complementary pillars. At TCI, we have a policy of donating an additional 0.5% of assets to charitable programs when our return for the year exceeds 11%. This mechanism ensures that every profit is partially transformed into social capital. In fact, just as we pursue efficiency and transparency in driving change in corporate governance, charity also needs to be managed entrepreneurially to ensure that every dollar donated can be efficiently translated into real social impact. 2009 is a typical example – CIFF made a profit of nearly £300 million from its investments, which, together with my donation, led to a significant increase in assets of the relevant programs within a year, reflecting the importance of the social capital of the organization. The 2009 example is typical – CIFF made nearly £300 million from its investments, which, combined with my donation, enabled the program to grow significantly in assets within a year, exemplifying the concept of ‘running a charity like a business’.

ICSO: In addition to your significant investment in CIFF, you have donated to climate activist organizations and pushed your portfolio companies to reduce carbon emissions. What are your goals and practices when it comes to environmental protection?

Chris Horn: Environmental issues are tied to the future of children. We cannot ignore the impact of climate change on the health and survival of the next generation. That’s why I not only support CIFF’s programs in the areas of health and education, but also focus on promoting environmental action. My donation of £200,000 to Fight Extinction, although relatively small, demonstrates my concern for the environment. At the same time, I have asked the companies we invest in to take active steps to reduce carbon emissions and promote green development. In this way, I hope to create a healthier and more sustainable environment for the future on many levels.

03 Exclusive Interview

ICSO: Despite your impressive achievements in the financial sector, you are known to live a very modest personal life, often using a £10 watch and leading a low-key lifestyle. Can you talk about the reasons behind this lifestyle?

Chris Horn: For me, a life of luxury does not represent true success. Wealth should be a tool to change society and help more people. Maintaining a low-key, simple lifestyle is a key reflection of my continued focus on the common good. It is this attitude that keeps me reminding myself that all success should be given back to the community. Wealth only realizes its value when it is used to improve the lives of others.

ICSO: Looking ahead, how do you see the combination of activist investing and philanthropy having a long-term impact on the global good?

Chris Horn: I firmly believe that the future of philanthropy will rely more on precision, data-driven models, and cross-border collaboration. By combining business strategies with philanthropic goals, we can achieve efficient use of funds and drive long-term social change. My goal is not only to help groups currently in distress, but also to build a fairer and more sustainable society for the future through institutionalized philanthropic mechanisms. Whether it is health, education or environmental protection, only by maximizing resources into social benefits can we truly usher in a promising future.

ICSO: Thank you very much for sharing these valuable experiences with us. Your practice not only proves the power of radical investment, but also demonstrates how success can be transformed into a driving force for social progress. I hope your philanthropic philosophy will inspire more entrepreneurs to put their wealth to work to change the world.

Chris Horn: Thank you, and I hope more people will realize that wealth is not just a symbol of personal achievement, but a commitment to social responsibility. Let’s work together to create a better future for the next generation.

Conclusion

Chris Horn has set an example of cross-border integration and continuous innovation in his practice of aggressive investing and philanthropic giving back.
